The Making of a Technician
Life in this trade is a spiral curriculum. You pass the same problems again and again, but if you are learning, you meet them at a different level each time.
The first circular dent teaches you where the tip is. The hundredth teaches you speed. The thousandth teaches you that speed was never the point.
Skill becomes automatic through repetition. I call this savant pushing. After enough repairs, a technician develops patterns so deep that he no longer consciously decides each action. He recognizes the damage and his body begins answering before language catches up.
This is useful. It is also dangerous.
Practice does not make perfect. Practice makes permanent.
If the pattern you repeat is good, repetition makes it available faster. If the pattern is poor, repetition makes the poor pattern harder to remove.
That is classic conditioning in the trade.
Every technician likes to imagine that experience is a ratchet that only moves upward. It is not. You can spend years becoming faster at something mediocre. You can become so familiar with your own shortcuts that they feel like truth.
This is especially common in environments where the required quality never changes. If an account only needs a dent taken to a certain level, a technician may become extraordinarily efficient at that level. There is nothing morally wrong with meeting the customer's requirement. The danger comes when the technician later assumes those habits automatically transfer to a higher standard.
I once worked with a technician who had decades in the trade and repeatedly told customers certain dents could not be repaired. I later repaired them. The lesson was not that I was better than an older man. The lesson was that years alone do not guarantee growth.
Thirty years can be thirty years of development, or one year repeated thirty times.
The difference is reflection.
Unlearning is expensive. A poor movement that has become automatic must first be noticed, then interrupted, then replaced. This is why young technicians should care deeply about method. What you practice now is becoming the technician you will later call instinctive.
Fear is one of the greatest obstacles in the transition from bulk work to finish work. The dent has improved dramatically, but now every movement seems capable of ruining it. The technician becomes timid. He stops releasing. He avoids sharp corrections. He circles the defect without committing.
The cure is not recklessness. The cure is knowledge and exposure.
Watch a better technician finish difficult damage. Notice what he is willing to touch and what he leaves alone. Notice how small his movements become. Notice how often he changes view. Then return to your own work and practice deliberately.
Certain qualities appear again and again in excellent technicians.
Hand and eye coordination is the entrance requirement, not the final achievement. Creative problem solving matters because every repair presents a slightly new arrangement of old problems. Endurance matters because difficult work rewards the person who remains mentally present long after enthusiasm has disappeared. Attention to detail matters because the final difference between acceptable and excellent often lives in what everyone else stopped seeing.
And refusal of mediocrity matters because your habits are always training you.
Customers often call this patience. I think endurance is the better word. Patience sounds passive, as though the technician is merely waiting. Good repair work is intensely active. You remain with the problem, testing, seeing, adjusting, and refusing to leave merely because the clock has become unpleasant.
A great technician can lose track of time because attention has narrowed to the panel.
That focus is powerful, but it must be governed. There is a point where fatigue reduces quality. Endurance is not the same thing as destroying yourself.
I see three broad stages in the development of a technician.
The first is Rote. You follow rules and patterns because someone taught them to you. You can perform useful work, but you may not yet understand why the sequence works.
The second is Recognition. You see the pattern before you begin. The dent resembles dozens you have already repaired. You recognize likely access, crown behavior, release points, and finish problems before the first push.
This is what many people call wizardry.
It is not wizardry. It is pattern recognition.
The third stage is Authorship. You understand the metal, understand the available tools, modify or create tools when necessary, explain your method to others, and contribute something back to the trade.
Authorship is not ego. A craft with no authorship begins each generation from the beginning.
The mature technician must also remain teachable.
Instinctive mastery carries a hidden cost. Once you become the person others ask for answers, it becomes very easy to stop asking questions yourself. You begin defending patterns because they are yours. You confuse success with finality.
That is stagnation wearing respectable clothes.
You do not need to reinvent the wheel every year. You do need to remain willing to discover that one of your favorite wheels is square.
Examine traditions. Ask whether the action still makes mechanical sense. If a whole trade repeats something only because the whole trade repeats it, that is not evidence. It is habit with witnesses.
Your own repair patterns deserve the same scrutiny.
Watch whether you tend to push left to right, outside in, center out, or in some other unconscious sequence. Notice how handedness, access, training, and body position shape your choices. Look for smaller patterns nested inside larger ones. I think of these as fractal patterns in the repair. The same tendencies repeat at different scales.
Ask a simple question: do my pushes have a pattern, and can I explain why?
That question is more useful than asking whether you are talented.
